Roku TV bundled releases its players in Germany By Reuters

BERLIN (Reuters) – TV complex general (NASDAQ 🙂 said on Monday it will launch streaming players in Germany later this year, its second largest European offering, in an effort to capitalize on the pandemic-driven shift toward watching more on-demand videos.

Roku will offer content from local partners Seven.One Entertainment Group, RTL Deutschland and Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ :)’s Sky Deutschland, as well as big names Netflix Inc (NASDAQ :), Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:): Prime and Walt Disney (NYSE 🙂 Co’s Disney +.

Roku started in San Jose, California in 2008 by marketing streaming players before developing a proprietary operating system that, she says, provides a smooth, easy interface for choosing what you want to watch on TV.

In Germany, Roku will compete with competitors including Amazon Fire TV stick and Google (NASDAQ 🙂 Chromecast.

Building on its primary franchise in the US, Roku entered the UK market https://www.reuters.com/article/tech-ifa-roku-idCNL3N25Y038 two years ago as a software partner to smart TV maker Hisense, but is taking a different approach in Germany by entering First with the plug-in launcher.

“There’s a very big secular shift toward influx… That’s a trend that has accelerated last year because of the pandemic,” Arthur van Rist, the CEO who is leading Roku’s international expansion, told Reuters in an interview.

Instead of passively consuming scheduled programmes, viewers are increasingly watching what they want when they want it. “Television and the way it is consumed is changing dramatically – and we’re at the heart of that,” he added.

Van Rest said Roku’s focus on offering the best video-on-demand platform means it expects to replace current smart TVs because manufacturer-installed software fails to keep up.

At the same time, offering an attractive interface is interesting for both publishers and advertisers as they seek to reach the German market where nearly half of households already have one or more video subscription deals.

Rocco said details on pricing for broadcast operators and retail distribution partners will follow. Roku charges £29.99 ($41.48) a month to the British streaming operator, with users paying for subscription channels like Netflix at the top.
